Pop Goes the Art!
Legacy Art Galleries exhibit unites two alumni through art
Absurdist leopard-print paintings may not pop immediately to mind when you think of Victoria’s artistic legacy. But that’s an oversight a new Legacy Maltwood exhibit will address with Eric Metcalfe: Pop Anthropology, an overview of the multimedia artist’s playful but powerful 60-year oeuvre.
Visual Arts alumnus Eric Metcalfe (BFA ’71, Hon DFA ’21) epitomizes the avant-garde in Canadian art and his work will be showcased via the curatorial efforts of Dorian Jesse Fraser (MA ’13), now a professor at MacEwan University.
Featuring over 80 works spanning his career—plus previously unseen notebooks, photos and ephemera—Pop Anthropology will offer an homage to Metcalfe’s role in the emergence of Victoria’s post-modern art scene.
“This is a chance to both celebrate Eric and UVic’s place in the art scene in Victoria, in BC, in Canada and in a larger sphere,” says Fraser.
